As AI continues to become more innovative, robust, and all-pervasive, professionals across the globe are getting perturbed about whether the idea of AI can replace them. Businesses of all sizes often need a lot of content online, from website descriptions to blog articles, social media copy, and use cases. When it comes to AI writing, the pertinent question is can AI replace human writers?

Let’s break this down.

AI’s Writing Capabilities

Artificial intelligence is the ability of a computer program to perform human-like functions, such as speech recognition and decision-making. The most well-known fields of AI include machine learning, natural language processing, and robotics. Over the last decade, AI has permeated into and in many cases, transformed various industries such as healthcare, finance, construction, and transport.

Until today, most companies relied solely on humans for their content writing. But this is changing now. There are several AI-driven writing tools that are available – Sassbook, Grammarly, Plag.ai and  ChatGPT. Among writers, these tools are popular because they help with ideation, title generation, summarization, structuring & outlining, and more.

Artificial intelligence uses deep learning and natural language processing to analyze millions of existing writing samples in its database. While deep learning attempts to mimic how the human brain processes data and extracts patterns, natural language processing tries to understand and generate language the way humans do. As a result, computers learn how to read and understand human languages.

Though some businesses depend upon AI for some of their writing, humans in the loop are still needed for validation and enrichment. AI headline generators, (Sassbook) plagiarism checkers (Plag.ai), and grammar checkers (Grammarly) are some examples of how AI can assist human writers. Automation tools enable writers to hone their skills and free them to focus on aspects of projects such as creativity, subtlety, and fine-tuning of messages. Content writers can now concentrate on the more fulfilling aspects of their work that suit their talents better.

AI writing can’t replace professional content writing, Why?

AI writing products like Persado, Quill, and Wordsmith demonstrate that AI has reached the point where it is good at certain tasks like grammar checks, assisting ideation, and copywriting. However, humans continue to excel at things AI cannot replicate, such as nuance, creativity, emotions, subtle humour, and empathy. Intelligence can be simulated by AI, but, in contrast,  creative and emotional expression cannot be simulated. AI writing still lacks creative context and suffers a high risk of inaccuracies. Thus, AI-generated articles continue to require human intervention for validation and enhancement of style and content.

Today’s market requires personalization based on an understanding of consumer needs and aspirations. Can AI bridge the gap between creating texts and connecting with audiences emotionally? It cannot and will not for a long time to come. Despite its processing power, AI cannot actually think without the guidance of a human writer.  The complexity of human thought and emotion allows human content writers to choose words that resonate with other humans far better than AI. It is impossible for AI writing to compete with a real person who has emotions, experiences, and an understanding of the brand’s goals. This is because every piece of content must help build relationships with customers.

AI writers fall short of these capabilities:

  • Analyzing audiences and personas — Communicating conversationally in a way that lets a customer know you understand them, requires a human writer.
  • Demonstrating authenticity — AI writers suffer from a higher risk of inaccuracies due to imprecise comprehension of context. Inaccurate content could even negatively impact a business.
  • Find compelling synonyms that express the emotion aptly—  Human writers know how to choose between the many words and phrases that describe an emotion to offer a satisfying reading experience. This is very hard for AI to replicate.

Conclusion

The most effective use of AI writers in the future is for scalability, fact-finding, and keyword churning. Human writers will continue to remain in vogue as long as brands are concerned with establishing a distinct identity and engaging their audiences.

Though technology will continue to advance and develop, there is still a long way to go for AI systems to have the ability to imagine, feel and comprehend complex emotions and creatively express them. Writers …  breathe a sigh of relief. The future is secure, for now.
